Iran International reported on 27 July 2026 that Arian Valipour, a 20-year-old detained after taking part in Iran’s January protests, attempted suicide at Great Tehran Penitentiary after an appeals court upheld his death sentence.
According to the outlet, Valipour was sentenced for “enmity against God” and accused of “collaborating with Israel” and “blocking a street.” These accusations and the reported court decision have not been independently verified by Human in Chain.
Iran International says Valipour was taken to the prison infirmary following the suicide attempt and was later transferred to Ghezel Hesar Prison. The transfer has intensified concerns that authorities may be preparing to carry out the sentence.
VOA Persian separately reported the same account on 27 July, citing information and reports circulating publicly. It stated that it could not independently verify the reported details. Iranian authorities have not publicly commented on the reported suicide attempt, transfer, or current medical condition.
