Death Sentences of Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl and Bita Hemmati Overturned
HRANA reports that the Supreme Court has overturned the death sentences of Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl and Bita Hemmati, while CHRI had previously documented the couple among the defendants sentenced to death in the same protest case.

On May 22, 2026, HRANA reported that Iran's Supreme Court had overturned the death sentences issued against Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl and his wife, Bita Hemmati, and referred their case to a parallel branch for retrial. According to HRANA, the couple had previously been sentenced to death by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court in the same case as two co-defendants.
In its April 30, 2026 report, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) listed Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl and Bita Hemmati among four defendants who had been sentenced to death in that January 2026 protest case. CHRI wrote that the four defendants were facing capital punishment on charges including operational collaboration with the hostile government of the United States and hostile groups, along with additional security-related accusations.
Based on HRANA's later report, the death sentences against the couple have now been overturned. HRANA also said the case had been referred for renewed proceedings and that Bita Hemmati was being held in the women's ward of Evin Prison.
